English Literature GCSE Paper 1: Shakespeare and the Nineteenth Century Novel

This exam is 1hour and 45 minutes long (2 hours 10 minutes with extra time)

Total 64 marks (40% of your literature mark)

You will need to learn quotations from Macbeth and Jekyll and Hyde.

Part A – Shakespeare 34 marks (4 marks for SPaG) =1hour (1 hour 15 mins) 

  1. Choose the Macbeth question IGNORE THE REST
  2. Spend 10 minutes annotating the extract and planning your response.
  3. Introduce the extract and explain at what point it appears in the play: This is the moment when Macbeth decides whether or not to kill King Duncan. He has just heard the witches’ prophecies and he has been very disturbed…
  4. Write (min) 2 PETAL paragraphs starting with the extract and then linking to the whole play.
  5. Write (min) 1 PETAL paragraphs using quotation from the rest of the play

  1. Choose the Jekyll and Hyde question IGNORE THE REST
  2. Spend 10 minutes annotating the extract and planning your response.
  3. Introduce the extract and explain at what point it appears in the novel: This is a description of Hyde from very early on in the novel, before the reader really knows…
  4. Write (min) 2 PETAL paragraphs starting with the extract and then linking to the whole novel.
  5. Write (min) 1 PETAL paragraph using quotation from the rest of the text
